Winter Activities

Hot Sulphur Springs is a historic gem nestled in the very heart of Grand County. Surrounded on all sides by beautiful scenery, the town is an ideal destination for outdoor adventures all year round, but especially in the winter. On average, Grand County gets about 130 inches of snow every year, making it one of the snowiest places in Colorado. With so much snow (and 7-9 months to enjoy it), Hot Sulphur is the perfect winter playground. Centrally located between Granby and Kremmling, Hot Sulphur Springs is just a short drive to other scenic locales in the county such as Parshall, Grand Lake, and Winter Park.

Enjoy a day on the slopes downhill skiing or snowboarding at one of two snow resorts in the county. The Winter Park Resort is an award-winning ski and board destination with over 3,000 acres of skiable terrain and an average snowfall of over 300 inches per year, making it an ideal place for snow enthusiasts of all skill levels. For those looking for a more intimate ski and board experience, Ski Granby Ranch is the place to go! They offer all the amenities of a larger resort and also boasts a large network of nordic and snowshoeing trails. In fact, you can try your feet at cross-country skiing or snowshoeing on a wide selection of trails all over the county from Grand Lake to Winter Park.

Interested in some ice skating? Hot Sulphur has a skating rink on the north side in the Town Park that is free and open to the public all winter, but if you’re on the east end of the county there are several other rinks to choose from, including The Icebox, a NHL-size rink in the Fraser Valley Sports Complex.

Saddle up with winter horseback riding tours or go for a scenic sleigh ride. You can take the whole family or have a more intimate ride for two! Looking for something a little more unique? Sign up for dog sledding at Snow Mountain Ranch, take a Snowcat tour, or rent a fat bike in Winter Park.

Sledding and tubing are classic and beloved winter pastimes, and Grand County has five destinations that are sure to blow you and the family away. Several of the tubing hills also have lights so that you can enjoy the fun at night!

Grand County is home to some of the best fishing in Colorado, and that is true year round! If you’re new to fishing, settle in with a guided ice fishing trip. All of the equipment is provided for you, (including a heated ice fishing hut). For more advanced or competitive anglers, there are three annual ice fishing contests throughout the county, providing plenty of opportunities to bring home a big catch and also a cash prize.

Have a few thrill-seekers in the family? Grand Lake has been dubbed the ‘Snowmobiling Capital of Colorado’ for good reason! The town offers over 300 miles of snowmobile trails for all skill levels, including over 150 miles of groomed trails, and the streets are left snow-packed during the winter months to allow snowmobilers to ride straight through town. Beyond the city limits, there are even more miles of terrain to explore across the county, and many rental and outfitter services offer guided and unguided tours, so you and your crew can get the best experience on the best terrain!

After a day out in the cold, come back to Hot Sulphur Springs for a nice long soak in our famous hot springs. You can also make it a whole spa day by scheduling a Swedish or deep tissue massage, and then head over to Dean’s Public House for a dinner off the ever-rotating menu in one of the oldest buildings in Grand County.

Grand County offers more than just beautiful vistas and outdoor adventure, it’s also a place full of history! Check out the Pioneer Village Museum in Hot Sulphur Springs for a peek into Grand County’s past. There are several other museums in the county for those interested in learning more about pioneer and Native history in the area.
